A Living Will enables people to make a written statement about medical care and life-saving treatment that they wish to receive or refuse should they become severely incapacitated and unable to make their wishes clear.
If you are left paralysed following a car accident, have a stroke, a terminal illness or develop dementia your doctors have a legal obligation to do everything medically possible to keep you alive. If, however, you have made a Living Will stating that should you become severely incapacitated you do not want to be kept alive with life-sustaining treatments then doctors must bear your stated wishes in mind.
